Arsene Wenger has promised us time and again that he will honor his contract, has criticized players for breaking their contracts, and has two years left on his current contract, so why would he be caught saying that Real Madrid would be “interesting?”
First of all, he didn’t say “I would be interested in going to Real” he actually said “A Florentino Perez project is inevitably interesting for all coaches.” That’s a far cry from saying that he’s personally interested.
Second, this is a story that the press put out pretty much every year. Last year it was “Henry left, Wenger has 12 months left on his contract, he’s leaving!” Some articles, put out by Usmanov, even had Wenger angrily asking to re-appoint David Dein or he would leave.
Third, as far as I can tell this story is being put out by people who are friendly to Usmanov and his dirty money. Usmanov recons he can get a few unhappy supporters in his pocketbook by linking Wenger to a “Galacticos” project. But again, note the full quote from Wenger “I am under contract with Arsenal and totally concentrated on my objectives here.”
He’s not leaving, and we shouldn’t be duped by this simplistic attempt by Red and White to sway us to their agenda.
One could use the “Wenger is Leaving” story as the basis for a ‘Laziness in journalism’ theory.
Ah, it’s almost June: run the Wenger story and let’s hit the bar early!

I have NO problem with AC Milan being interested in Ade. I DO, however, have a VERY large problem with them making an approach through the press instead of talking to Arsenal about it. He is still under contract. The rules state that you cannot approach a player under contract without permission from the club who holds his contract. To me, this is as bad or worse than holding a secret meeting with a player to discuss a transfer. You may not have TECHNICALLY broken any rules but your intent to most definitely to circumvent the rule. While Chelsea aren’t my favorite team, at least their coaches and owners are doing everything they can to unsettle the player.
Alex – I am in complete agreement with you on that. I was simply wondering if the Chelsea rumor is bogus, unless Chelsea is getting rid of some of their existing strikers.
Rumor has it Drogba is going back to Marseille. If so, they may get him on the cheap too if the other rumor that UEFA is going to suspend him for 6 months is true.
We should remember ‘Le Boss’ is not English, and his use of the language throws up some strange constructions, and phrases, open to misinterpretation. He makes a personal statement, like, “I think the team played well today, they showed a lot of spirit”. Then he will follow this with a number of generalities, and broad observations. In fact many of his public statements are generalities.
I think we can assume his statement about the unReal Madrid job falls in that category. i.e. It would be an interesting job for any coach, he just failed to add, ‘but not for me!’ because he is inclined not to personalise.
Of course he could have added ‘for any coach with a sheeps head, who enjoys grief, interference, a dressing room full of giant ego’s, and a crowd that will waive their handkerchiefs at the drop of a ….a….handkerchief!” But then he is also a gentleman.
Agree with Alex on AC Milan, what is the difference between a telephone conversation, and shouting through a megaphone. the medium is different but the message is the same.

Wenger would HATE Madrid and even more so hate Perez and his policies. We all know Arsene to some degree and for the past 13 years he’s been at a club where he’s been able to influence just about everything: from club policy to stadium building to team selection. At Real Madrid it’s Florentino’s way or the highway. Wenger could not tolerate some random new Galactico showing up every other day on his training ground. He’d be devoid of the control he’s come accustomed to at Arsenal and it would just eat away at him every day. I think any manager in the world would be interested in managing Real just because they’re one of the most successful and biggest clubs in football history – that being said admiring the club and wanting to manage the club are very different ideas. I think there’s enough people out there who love the idealization of being president but given current circumstances would not actually want to be in his position right now. Wenger is not leaving the club right now, but the board does need to support him better and come up with a really good war chest so Wenger can fill in the gaps in the team as he sees fit.

I know that he is considering it, things have gone sour at the emirates recently and you could see it on his body language… he is considering it but there is more chance he will stay… it could also be him bargaining with the board for the summer
