Arsenal 2001-2008 graphically

I don’t know what this means but I’ve been wanting to make it for a while, maybe it’s like that potato mountain in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and I just NEEDED to do it.

Anyway, I made a line chart of Arsenal’s goal differential, total points, and eventual league finish and here it is

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???

Enjoy.

Here’s an annotated version

It makes me sad to see this...

  1. Ah-ha! Statistics

Interesting, remembering the well worn quote, of ‘lies, damned lies and statistics’

What it doesn’t reveal, is the comparative strengths of the top teams in that period.
In our successful years were the other teams comparartively weaker, i.e. squad rebuilding, injuries and suspension to key players. Likewise in our less successful seasons have we been rebuilding etc?

Admittedly we all feel flat this season with so much promised, and much nearly delivered, but not quite.

However for a bit of cheering-up look at the Wikipedia entry for Arsenal.

Which club is rated by Forbes as the third most valuable in the world, behind Mancs & unReal Madrid? Which club has the 6th highest revenue?

Which club has a 49 match unbeaten top flight record?

Which team has the most consecutive seasons in the top-flight? (82)

Which team has gone the most matches in the CL without conceding a goal (10)

Which team has the second most PL titles? (Noting that Liverpiddle have never won it)!

And so on. Don’t tell me we’re not one of the top teams in the world!

Silverware means a lot, but there are other records to be proud of too!

What is this I hear of Rosicknote training with the 1st team squad?

I shall be looking for A.Lazarus on next seasons team sheet

  2. Interesting for me is to look at 2001 where 87 points and +43 GD was a Double winning year. Yet the pretty similar 83 points and +43 GD in 2007 was only good enough for 3rd place and no trophies. The previous commenter’s point about the strength of our peers is very valid.

And I really hope we can do Man Utd on their turf and make them take the title challenge to Hull on the last day of the season. That would be so excellent.

  3. 1. Something in the 80s will make us title challengers, something in the 70s will not.
    2. We break up teams that before they can go on a sustained run of 80s.
    3. We’ve been in a trough of 60s for four years, and last season was an aberration.
    4. Everything started to go badly once we lost Vieira.
