Appiah? Please….

The World’s Least Reliable News Source is linking 27 year old Ghana midfield enforcer, Stephen Appiah to Arsenal and now it’s being picked up by other outlets like Sky.

How is this even possible?  Well, he’s a free agent so the “transfer window” doesn’t shut for him.  But we’re talking about a player here who was most recently cut by Fenerbahce.  I guess he could provide some cover but I have serious reservations about his quality if he can’t make it at Fener.

We’ll have to wait and see, but my money’s on Wenger going with kids like Ramsey before he buys anyone like Appiah.

  1. First of all, nice work, Tim, I only relatively recently stumbled upon your blog and I now follow it just as frequently as the arseblog. Kudos!

Appiah didn’t *not* make the cut at Fener – I understand he cancelled his contract by mutual agreement with the club after coming back from an almost life-threatening year-long injury. The injury is a problem in itself, but Appiah IS class and up there with Essien in my opinion. All action box-to-box midfielder who’s proven his merit at clube like Juventus.

I’d most welcome it if we signed him.

  2. why not he is an experience player and strong and fighter without an experience in CHAMPIONS LEAGUE we can do nothing. pls bring APPIAH in our squad

  3. For an explanation of his fitness and issues with Fenerbache, get it from the man himself at

Would be a good signing for us and he is available. But I dont think Wenger will want to block AbuDenSong now that all 3 have the chance to step up. Wenger has shown complete and utter faith that they can do it so to stop now would be a cop out for him.

  4. Yeah he a good player. He is captain of ghana team ahead of the likes of essien and muntari which are both at big clubs. In ghana people love him much more than essien. Hahaha its scary to say but he can somtimes work even harder than essien AND essien can surrrrreee work hardd.

  5. hey,i don’t understand how it went with wenger during the deadline notch, still don’t know why he couldn’t snap a player like guzman frm feynoord,it is appalling, do we have to stick to ramsey and denilson ,with the likes of deco and lampard or berbatov and tevez breathing on their backs? Can they withstand the pressure.

  6. Might just happen hey. All kinds of stories have been spreading around and with Arsene not having commented on not having signed someone, you have to wonder if something is going on behind the scenes…Would be great if we signed him. He’s strong, quick, good tackler and very competitive. The guys won the league in Turkey so he knows pressure. Funny enough, if we were to sign him he would be playing against his old side Fenerbache as they are in our Champions league group

  7. I Remember Appiah In The 2006 World Cup, He Out Shone Essien By Far. Whether He Is Still The Player He Was 2 Years Ago, Having Come Through A Serious Injury Remains To Be Seen. BUT, If Bischoff Is Worth A Gamble Then Appiah Must Be !

  8. If Arsene can take a gamble on Bischoff there is no reason he shouldn’t do the same on Appiah.

I saw him play in the last World Cup and was excellent. At 27 he is still young enough to step right in and also give us time to groom the young uns.

Having said that, Arsene seems to have made his bed and I don’t expect another signing unless we unravel and he tries to rectify it during the January window.

  9. I am still in a state of shock from our inability to strengthen the squad.

Can’t see how this squad is going to compete on all fronts this season even if we escape injuries. The core group will be totally worn to the bone come March.

  10. no lol he was at london colney on deadline day belived to be having a medical but obviosly he didnt pass or we didnt sign him for whatever reason. anyway hes still in london and sky sports were saying today that west ham may be in for him

  11. couldn’t make it at fen?u avn a laf?
where did you get that info?

he is quality, energetic and has loads of experience compared to them that we have at the mo.so it may not be true because i don’tthink wenger will sign him but the quality of appiah is there to see,his power play style of football earned him the nickname “TORNADO” in the ghanaian league and he’s more than proved and lived up to that in italy and turkey bar injuries.

he may not be coming to arsenal but don’t diss the guy and the quality he brings to football.
ps:biscoff is even in our ranks.

  12. Wenger had his eye on Appiah a few years ago and sang his praises….I would love to see his grit in the centre of our set up. If he is fit and over his injury he would be a fantastic signing. When he publicly appeared on West Hams radar over a week ago before our deadline anticlimax, I suspected that Wenger must be taking a look, due to his past interest.

  13. yeah am also a fan of appiah u can imagine a nigerian saying that.the guy is damn good.but can somebody also pls tell my mr wenger that ther r many players here in africa and nigeria that r very good and also maybe out of contract.he can coem in forthem.africans are the strongest dms we can get.take charge evryone God is up to something. love ya all.

  14. He is a great guy,he has the engines of essien. i hope he will be our answer to him when we meet chelsea.

  15. For your information ,Wenger tried to sign on the last day of the transfer,he bidded for the xabi alonso and the offer was rejected since gerrard was out with injury so they could not weaken their midfield and couple with the fact that gareth barry was not forth coming. secondly wenger bidded for Veloso but the buyout clause was nothing to write home about since it was in the range of 30 million pounds for a central midfielder and sporting were trying to make most of that amount which made the likes of madrid, juventus, barca and milan to back out on the deal . 3rdly wenger made a last minute bid for INLER and udinese came out bold to say NO to the deal with the player himself stating that it will be too early for him to leave the club after spending just a season there. so we dont have to kill wenger but to get behind him but for sure he’ll get us a central midfielder come january and i pray we wont be in crisis by then…..

  16. I read on wikipedia that Appiah went for medical check up for arsenal on 4th september. Hmmmm. Anyone can confirm about that? I am sure when Wenger said he wants a midfielder means he doesnt have faith on denilson diaby. Not song, as he regarded him as defender!

  17. The reason i have too believe that Wenger will sign Appiah, is that he has been linked with him for four years…

  18. I think stephen will b a very good signing. B’cos of his strenght,outside shots,motivational play,passes am nigerian believe av known dis guy 4 almost 6yrs, but it’s up 2 d prof’
